Down vs synthetic insulation is the hiking debate that never ends — and for good reason. Each wins in different conditions. Pick the wrong one and you’ll be cold, wet, or carrying twice the weight you need.

How down works

How synthetic works
Polyester fibers (PrimaLoft and similar) mimic down’s air-trapping structure with continuous fibers that hold loft when wet. Slightly heavier per warmth, but works wet and dries faster. Synthetic insulated jackets on Amazon

When to pick down
- Dry, cold climates (Rockies, high alpine summer, dry winter).
- Ultralight backpacking where every ounce counts.
- You take good care of your gear and store it lofted.
When to pick synthetic
- Rainy, humid climates (Pacific Northwest, coastal, jungle).
- High-output hiking where sweat will get into the insulation.
- Sleeping in shelters where condensation drips on you.
- Budget-conscious hikers.
The hybrid emerges
Hydrophobic down (water-treated) closes some of the wet-performance gap. Hybrid jackets (synthetic in cuffs and shoulders, down in core) try to combine the best of both. Both are excellent if your budget allows.

Frequently asked questions
What does fill power actually mean?
It is a measure of how much space one ounce of down occupies. Higher fill power (for example 800 versus 600) means the down lofts more, so a jacket can be lighter and pack smaller for the same warmth. It says nothing about how much down is in the jacket, so check fill weight too.
Can a down jacket get wet?
Light drizzle on a treated shell is fine; a soaking is not. Wet down clumps and stops insulating until it dries. Carry a shell over it in rain and keep it in a dry bag inside your pack.
Which is better for three-season hiking?
For most three-season hikers a light down jacket for rest stops plus a breathable synthetic or fleece layer for moving is the most versatile pairing. If you hike mainly in wet, mild conditions, synthetic alone is the safer choice.
